Their disappearances triggered an immediate response from their worried families, who reported them missing on Sunday, September 18th. The community rallied together, launching a desperate search for any sign of the teenagers.
Fateful 911 Call Leads to Heartbreaking Discovery
On Sunday, September 18th, a chilling 911 call shattered the hopes of the families and the community. Two men riding ATVs in a remote area stumbled upon a scene that would forever be etched in their memories.
“Um, we’ve actually discovered two dead bodies,” the caller stammered, his voice heavy with shock. “We were…we were actually putting our deer stand up, and we discovered them.”
The location, described as an area where the power company had been working, was difficult to access, adding to the isolation and tragedy of the discovery.
Investigation Unfolds, Juvenile Petition Filed
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office immediately launched an investigation into the deaths of Woods and Clark. The victims were quickly identified, and the case took a significant turn days later. A juvenile petition was filed against a 17-year-old suspect on two counts of first-degree murder.

North Carolina Law and the 17-Year-Old Suspect
Under North Carolina law, individuals aged 16 and 17 accused of crimes are not automatically charged as adults. This protocol, enacted in 2019, requires a different legal process for juvenile offenders.
According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, if a notice of indictment is issued or the court finds probable cause for a Class A through G felony committed by a 16 or 17-year-old, a District Court judge must transfer the case to Superior Court. First-degree murder, the charge levied against the suspect in this case, falls under the category of Class A felony in North Carolina.
As of now, the suspect’s name has not been released to the public.
